The development of a new library at NUI Maynooth, due to begin on site by December of 2009, will create 150 new Irish construction jobs in the County Kildare town, according to Irish Education Minister Batt O’Keefe TD.

The state-of-the-art €20m library is set to open in 2011 and will increase the size of the existing library facilities by 100 per cent, providing spaces for more than 1,200 students at any one time.

Architects for the project will be appointed in the coming weeks and the brief is “to create a signature building that will be a focal point for the campus. Planning submissions will be made in the first half of 2009, with construction expected to start by December.

The library will house the latest in IT technologies, in addition to the 455,000 books, 500 open IT areas with wifi and more than 6,000 DVDs.
