Construction spearheads UK industries' acceptance of foreign professional qualifications
Published 12 Feb 2008

The UK construction industry has been noted in a TUC report as the only business sector in the UK that is effectively using the wide range of skills that foreign construction professionals and skilled construction workers bring to UK construction jobs.

The TUC report, Migrant Workers in the Labour Market, claims employers in many UK industry sectors are missing out on many opportunities by keeping migrant workers in low-skilled jobs.

The reports states there is a huge gap between the present contribution migrant workers make to the UK economy and the contribution they could make if their skills and qualifications were recognised by employers.

The TUC say that the UK construction industry is the only sector that is seeking advice from the National Recognition Information Centre (UK NARIC) on the compatability of qualifications that construction professionals seeking work in UK have achieved in other countries with British qualifications.

UK NARIC provides information on qualifications from 183 countries, and can help employers recruit migrant workers into jobs that reflect their skills.
